Hanalei Bay is where all the action is this Saturday, July 30, starting with the Namalokama Open Water Swim followed by a Sandcastle Competition on the beach.
Registration for the open water swim starts at 7 am and events begin at 9 am. There will be pier swims (up and back) for children under 8 and kids 9-12, and half mile, one mile and two mile swims for youth and adults.
Keiki swimmers will receive a participant’s ribbon, commemorative t-shirt, food and drinks. Like to register early? Download forms on the Namalokama website or pick one up at local athletic clubs, bike and surf shops on Kauai. Over 500 swimmers from age 4 to 80 have participated in this event since its inception. Let’s get wet!
Then dry off and attend the free Sandcastle competition to the left of the Hanalei pier (right of Pavilion Beach Park) between 11am and 4pm.
World renowned sand sculptor Jeff Peterson will give a free lesson at 11:30 and then it’s ready, set, shovel!
Everyone – keikis to kupuna, beginners to experienced sculptors/artists – are welcome to this fun event. Just bring shade, sunscreen, water, shovels, pails, tools, molds, and sprayers (squirt guns work too!).
Judging takes place at 3:30 and prizes will be awarded at 4 pm in five categories:
- Keiki under 12
- Youth 12-17
- Beginner Level
- Competitive Level
- Teams (including families)
See you there!
